How does it work?
Veterinary Behaviorists use the science of learning and ethology (scientific knowledge of species-specific behavior) to help clients improve their pet’s behavior. Our methods are non-confrontational, humane and designed to decrease household stress while improving the human-animal bond.
The Process
After assessing your pet's and family's needs, we develop a custom treatment plan to be carried out at home by your family. Plans may include modifications to your daily interaction with your pets and behavior modification training and games. Even 15 minutes a day can achieve results. In general, the more committed you are to working with your pet, the faster and better your improvements will be.
Initial Behavior Consultation - 60-90 minutes
In this appointment you will meet with a veterinary behaviorist regarding your concerns. We can do the assessment at our clinic in Castle Pines, or in your home. You will be asked to complete and return the appropriate Behavior History, your pet's COMPLETE medical record from your primary vet, and all previous trainer/behaviorist notes after you schedule an appointment. After your appointment you’ll receive resources that will help you work more effectively and safely with your companion. After an Initial Behavior Consultation most clients also schedule therapy appointments so that the individualized program can be developed.
Behavioral Therapy Appointments - 30-45 minutes
These appointments are with our Behavior Therapists. They are specially qualified to help implement the treatment plan put in place by the veterinary behaviorist. They will help guide you and your pet through the training process for necessary behavior modification in order to achieve desired goals more efficiently.
Behavioral Therapy Appointments are weekly until the first reassessment with the doctor, and range every 2-3 weeks following the reassessment.
Head Start Appointment - 60-90 minutes
Unsure if you need to see a vet or just need help with training and management? Are you concerned about having to wait to see a Behavior Vet? A Head Start appointment could be just the thing! These appointments are with our skilled Behavior Therapists, and help you get a head start on the training and management techniques you need to start seeing results right away.
Reassessment Appointments - 30-60 minutes
Most patients need 2-4 rechecks with the veterinary behaviorist for the best success. These are generally scheduled every 4-8 weeks, depending on a patient's individual needs. Some families need more frequent rechecks, especially if they are adding a medication to their pet's treatment plan or want more involved behavior modification assistance. Rechecks can be done in clinic, or by phone/video chat (depending on the situation). Email communications are limited to medication refills and appointment scheduling and are not appropriate for rechecks. Please submit your recheck history form at least 72 hours prior to your appointment. If not received, we will request you reschedule the appointment.
